Sadly I have to tell you that Rod passed away last Wednesday,Feb 22. In Mackay, Qld. He had a long year health wise with numerous tests on heart, lung and kidneys. Then on Jan 23 he was diagnosed with aggressive pancreatic cancer but was already too weak to undergo treatment. He passed away quietly with myself, his son and my daughter by his side. He stubbornly held on for a trip to Hawaii and with help of my sister and brother-in-law he spent his 71st birthday visiting the USS Arizona Memorial and the Aviation Museum, which was what he really wanted to do. Always remained a "Possum" at heart and I have no doubt he will re-join the ranks so to speak. At age 81, he lost his battle with a bad infection yesterday in his home. Dad served for 28 years in the Corps as a Recov Mech who eventually got tired of pulling trucks out of the mud so he went Regimental stream. Although he retired in 1979 as RSM of 3 Base Wksp Bn, Broadmeadows, he remembered with greatest affection his time at 103 Fd Wksp, particularly when located at Leichhart. It was there that he established what was then known as Cook's Private Army (they even had badges made up). This was an organisation capable of doing everything required for the betterment of the Wksp and the Corps. Dad took his love of the Corps right into his later years. Anyone who received a care pack whilst deployed may not have known that the idea for these originated from Dad along with one of his good mates from the NSW Association, Fred Jolly. Name: NEGRO, GENE Rank: Not Provided Regimental No: Not Provided Trade: Not Provided Year Joined: Not Provided Years Served: Not Provided Date Deceased: 24 Mar 11 | As most people know, the funeral of Gene Negro was held yesterday afternoon (22 Mar 2011) at the Fremantle Cemetery. For the benefit of those people who were unable to attend, Gene was farewelled by his family and literally hundreds of friends and colleagues. In the very short time Gene was given, he had planned the format of his own funeral - he chose the music and pictorial compilation, asked for flags and pipers and even allocated friends and family to speak and deliver the eulogy etc. Given that, in true 'Gene' style, the Service was (for want of a better word) 'entertaining'! - the result was lots and lots of laughter mingled with a few unavoidable tears. At the conclusion of the Service and just prior to the Commital, something quite unusual happened - Gene received a standing ovation. To witness 600 people at a funeral applauding loudly non-stop for 2-3 minutes was quite unique, and a huge accolade for the man lying before us. Gene's family would like to express | ![]() | ||||||

I have posted some info on our website which I now attach: Post Mon 14/2/11 I was advised late this afternoon that Norm Hicks-Hall, the inaugural OC of 106 when it was raised at Nui Dat in 1968, died in a fire at his residence on the Gold Coast earlier today. Post Tue 15/2/11 We have received further advice today re Norm and Trish Hicks-Hall from the Currumbin RSL's Len Cooper who works within the RSL's Veterans' Support Centre.
